Our tour starts in the garden to show the site, then proceeds to the old part of the Castle, and finally moves into the private house. The previous occupants of the house include the first Norman Earls of Devon, the de Redvers from 1105, then the Courtenays, one of whom married Princess Katherine of York, Henry VIII`s favourite aunt. The Castle was besieged and captured by Sir Thomas Fairfax in 1645 and parts were later demolished so that it could never be used in battle again.
Unfortunately HHA members have to pay, as their membership does not count on privately organised visits such as this.
